The nature of industrial wastewater varies according to the type of industry involved and also depends upon the singular characteristics of each individual factory.  Owing to the substantial differences even between factories producing the same products, each case must be assessed on its own merits. 

  The environmental requirements applicable to industrial wastewater stem from the need to protect the systems used to transport and treat the sewage in addition to the need to protect the bodies of water into which the treated effluents are pumped.   In Israel most of the effluents are recycled for agricultural irrigation and consequently, from the environmental point of view, industrial wastewater must be assessed while taking into consideration the nature of the effluents’ input destination.   

  The pre-treatment required for industrial wastewater prior to pumping it into the municipal sewage system has been defined by the local authority in a municipal bye-law, which varies according to the type of wastewater concerned and the contents of its pollutants.   Possible solutions for treatment are many and varied.
